John "Jake" Aikens was born July 14th, 1967 in Richmond, VA. It was a short stay as
the family moved to Pittsbutgh, PA two years later.
Jake began playing piano at the age of six and added upright bass in Junior High School after joining the orchestra. He was
invited to join Discovery, a successful cover band in the Pittsburgh area and began playing electric bass at 17. Covering
material by Rush, Yes, Journey, Kansas, and Led Zeppelin, among others, allowed Jake to further hone his skills and add Rock and Roll to his musical resume. Eventually the
members of Discovery decided to change formats and began playing classic and contemporary Jazz, quickly becoming regulars at
Pittsburgh Jazz clubs and making two appearances at the Kool Jazz Festival. Jake earned many accolades and the respect of musicians
twice his age. Jake also worked as a Consultant for the Pittsburgh Symphony in 1986.
Soon after High School Jake was offered a position as Musical Director for a touring dance band and went out on the road for the
first time. After three years he settled in the Washington, DC area and began playing for Doug Parks and the Lone Wolves at night
and working as a Recording Engineer by day.
In 1992 Jake moved to Nashville, TN and began working as an A&R rep for Black Box Records, a now defunct indie label. After a few years banging on doors he was able to
build an impressive resume playing with such acts as Matthew Ryan and the Caustics, Stacey Earle, Orkestra Mondo Pingus, and Sheb Wooley;
appearances at Dave Pomeroy's Monday Night Madness and with the All Bass Orchestra, and has played bass and piano on several tv and
radio commercials. One little known fact is that Jake played with five different bands in one day at the Summer Lights Festival one
year! Also of note are his stints as voice talent for the Shop At Home Network.
Moving to Houston in 1999, Jake met Jeff Lovejoy and was invited to join 900lbs in 2002. He took a one year hiatus but returned
to the band in early 2005.
