United States' 250th Birthday

Washington Monument Projection Mapping

THE CLIENT

Freedom 250 is a national nonpartisan public-private partnership launched by the White House to lead the official high-profile celebrations for the United States' 250th anniversary in 2026.

THE CHALLENGE

The primary challenge for the 900lbs team was the technical and creative difficulty of adapting historical narratives to the Washington Monument’s unique, 555-foot vertical tapered geometry. Because the structure's aspect ratio is extremely narrow, the team had to innovate ways to display horizontally oriented subjects, such as the Wright brothers' airplane, without losing visual impact. Additionally, the project required the curators to distill 250 years of complex American history into a concise series of scenes that effectively balanced broad themes like innovation and discovery. To ensure the final production was seamless, the crew also had to navigate rigorous late-night onsite testing to master how the monument's marble surface captured light and contrast.

THE EXPERIENCE

To launch America’s 250th anniversary, the Dallas-based agency 900lbs (alongside four other teams) transformed the iconic 555-foot Washington Monument into a massive, four-sided digital canvas. This immersive, projection-mapped experience ran for six nights, beginning with a dramatic debut on New Year’s Eve. The display utilized large-scale animation, motion graphics, and 3D scenes to narrate seminal moments in the country’s history. Audiences watched as pivotal achievements, such as the Wright brothers’ first flight and Thomas Edison’s inventions, were projected onto the monument’s marble surface. The visual spectacle was enhanced by custom audio and a synchronized voiceover, creating a shared sense of standing "inside the story." To execute this complex production, the creative team overcame significant technical hurdles posed by the structure’s unique aspect ratio and vertical scale. The six-night presentation, produced in collaboration with the Freedom 250 organization, culminated in a breathtaking fireworks finale on January 5th. Ultimately, this patriotic tribute served as a memorable kickoff for a year-long slate of commemorative events planned for 2026.

THE RESULTS

Major national and global media covered the story! CBS 11 Dallas News showcased the story on the 10:00 News, Dallas Morning News highlighted the story on the cover of its Business Section, and there was a Freedom 250 website that streamed the live experience. Each night, countless numbers of people came to the National Mall to witness the experience in-person.
